If design is merely an inducement to consume, then we must reject design; if architecture is merely the codifying of the bourgeois models of ownership and society, then we must reject architecture; if architecture and town planning is merely the formalization of present unjust social divisions, then we must reject town planning and its cities – until all design activities are aimed towards meeting primary needs. Until then design, must disappear. We can live without architecture.^AN One of the characteristics of our profession is that both our professional profile and our field of activity are constantly in flux, with constantly changing definitions. This is its strength. Because life and society are constantly changing and redefining themselves, the field that is so closely linked to this life and derives its effect from the interaction with society must do the same.^HH

All architecture is conceptual in nature because architecture only exists conceptually.^DJK Obviously a drawing of a building is not a real building, but a drawing of a line is a real line.^DSLW An architect doesn’t go off with a shovel and dig his foundation and lay every brick. He’s still an architect.^DSLW The ‘real architecture’ only exists in the drawings. The ‘real building’ exists outside the drawings. The difference here is that ‘architecture’ and ‘building’ are not the same.^PE Architecture is always a matter of theory. Architecture is not a thing in the world. It’s a theoretical reading of the world. Or, more precisely, it is the gesture in which theory is identified in the material world. To point to Architecture is to point to theory.^DMW Architecture is the critical commentary on the human-made environment.^SSS Architecture is, in many ways, a very specific type of science fiction; it is its own genre of speculative thought.^GM

For, if one discusses an object or a building, one cannot discuss the nature of design and architecture; if one produces an object or a building, one accepts tradition and all it entails, since what has been built or produced is only one type of design or architecture, not design or architecture themselves. If one’s purpose is to make objects or buildings, one accepts (and does not question) the prevailing ideas of architecture and design.^GC-DJK When words such as space and form are used, they connote a whole tradition and imply a consequent acceptance of this tradition, thus placing limitations on the architect who would be reluctant to make architecture that goes beyond the limitations.^DSLW Making something new to look at is a futile and empty act if its only audience is the eyes.JK Architecture that imposes conditions – human or otherwise – on the receiver for its appreciation in my eyes constitutes aesthetic fascism.^DLW The only architecture I’m interested in is the architecture I don’t understand right away. If you understand it right away it really has no use except as nostalgia.^DLW If you can’t make architecture without making a permanent imprint on the physical aspects of the world, then maybe architecture is not worth making.^DLW

I am not really that interested in objects. I am interested in ideas.^SLW All intervening steps, scribbles, sketches, drawings, failed work models, studies, thoughts, conversations, are of interest. Those that show the thought process of the architect are sometimes more interesting than the final product.^DSLW What the work of architecture looks like isn’t too important. It has to look like something if it has a physical form. No matter what form it may finally have it must begin with an idea. It is the process of conception and realization with which the architect is concerned.^DSLW Ideas alone can be works of architecture; they are in a chain of development that may eventually find some form. All ideas need not be made physical.^DSLW The idea is the architecture. The concept is the process of materializing the idea in the world. The materialization of the idea is the medium through which we make the idea available to others; be it speech, writing, drawing, film, music, performance, building.^SSS Every medium is a possible messenger through which we can communicate the idea. Unfortunately in architecture we confuse the messenger with the message. The medium will shape the message, but the medium is not the message. The building as well as the drawing are not the architecture.^DSSS

The purest definition of architecture would be that it is an enquiry into the
foundations of architecture.^DJK Everything I say is Architecture is Architecture. Everything I do is Architecture is Architecture.^DMLU Anything can be architecture. Architecture is the relations between relations, not the relations between objects or space.^DJK Forget your ideas about architecture. Make a shopping list of everything you like about what you’ve done. Include qualities that you’ve seen in your life, in the world, and possibly in architecture that you like. Take this list and make a work that satisfies all of the things on your list without caring if it looks like architecture.^DJK Everything is architecture.^HH

건축 – 정의를 향하여^DPE

디자인이 단지 소비를 유도하는 것에 불과하다면, 우리는 디자인을 거부해야 한다. 건축이 단지 부르주아적 소유와 사회 모델을 규명하는 것이라면, 우리는 건축을 거부해야 한다. 건축과 도시 계획이 단지 현재의 불공정한 사회적 분할을 형식화하는 것이라면, 우리는 도시 계획과 그 도시들을 거부해야 한다. 모든 디자인 활동이 기본적인 필요를 충족시키는 방향으로 나아갈 때까지. 그때까지 디자인은 사라져야 한다. 우리는 건축 없이도 살 수 있다.^AN 우리 직업의 특징 중 하나는 전문적인 프로필과 활동 분야가 끊임없는 정의의 변화와 함께 끊임없이 변화하고 있다는 것이다. 이것이 바로 우리 직업의 강점이다. 삶과 사회가 끊임없이 변화하고 재정의되기 때문에, 이 삶과 밀접하게 연결되어 있으며 사회와의 상호작용에서 효과를 이끌어내는 건축 분야 역시 동일하게 변화해야 한다.^HH

모든 건축은 사실상 개념적이다. 왜냐하면 건축은 개념적으로만 존재하기 때문이다. DJK 그려진 건물은 실제 건물이 아니지만, 그려진 선은 실제 선이다.^DSLW 건축가는 삽을 들고 나가 기초를 파거나 벽돌을 하나하나 쌓지 않는다. 그럼에도 여전히 건축가다. ‘진정한 건축’은 드로잉 속에만 존재한다.^DSLW ‘실제 건물’은 도면 밖에 존재한다. 여기서 차이점은 ‘건축’과 ‘건물’이 동일하지 않다는 것이다.^PE 건축은 항상 이론에 관한 것이다. 건축은 세상에 존재하는 사물이 아니다. 건축은 세상을 이론적으로 해석하는 방식이다. 더 정확히 말하자면, 건축은 이론이 물질 세계에서 소통할 수 있도록 하는 제스처다. 건축을 말하는 것은 이론을 말하는 것이다.^DMW 건축은 인간이 만든 환경에 대한 비판적 논의다.^SSS 건축은 여러 면에서 특정한 유형의 공상과학이며, 추측을 기반으로 하는 사고의 고유한 장르다.^GM

누군가 사물이나 건물을 논의한다면, 디자인과 건축의 본질을 논의할 수 없다. 누군가 사물이나 건물을 생산한다면, 전통과 그에 수반되는 모든 것을 수용한다. 왜냐하면 만들어진 것은 단지 한 유형의 디자인이나 건축일 뿐이지, 디자인이나 건축 자체는 아니기 때문이다. 누군가 사물이나 건물을 만드는 것이 목적이라면, 건축 및 디자인에 대한 기존의 아이디어에 대하여 어떠한 의문도 제기하지 않고 수용한다.^GC-DJK ‘공간’이나 ‘형태’와 같은 단어가 사용될 때, 그 단어들은 전통 전체를 암시하며, 그 전통을 완전히 수용한다는 것을 암시한다. 이러한 수용적 태도는 한계를 넘어서는 건축을 꺼리는 건축가에게 스스로의 한계를 만든다.^DSLW 단지 눈을 즐겁게 하기 위한 새로운 것이라면, 새로운 것을 만드는 행위는 헛되고 공허하다.JK 나는, 사용자의 눈에 들도록 특정한 조건을 강요하는 건축은 미학적 파시즘이라고 여긴다.^DLW 나의 관심을 끄는 건축은 그 바로 즉시 이해되지 않는 건축이다. 만약 어느 건축이 즉시 이해된다면, 그것은 단지 노스탤지어에 불과하다.^DLW 물리적 측면으로 세상에 영구적인 흔적을 남기지 않고 건축 행위를 할 수 없다면, 건축 행위는 아무런 가치도 없을지 모른다.^DLW

나는 사물 자체에는 큰 관심이 없다. 내가 관심 있는 것은 아이디어다.^SLW 모든 중간 단계들, 낙서들, 스케치들, 도면들, 실패한 모형들, 연구들, 생각들, 대화들은 매우 흥미롭다. 건축가의 사고 과정을 보여주는 이러한 것들은 때때로 최종 결과물보다 훨씬 흥미롭다.^DSLW 건축물이 어떻게 보이는가는 전혀 중요치 않다. 물리적 형태가 있다면 건축물은 결과적으로 어떠한 형태로든 보여야 하겠지만, 건축물이 어떤 형태를 갖게 되든 시작은 반드시 아이디어에서 비롯되어야 한다. 건축가의 과업은 개념화와 현실화의 과정이다.^DSLW 아이디어만으로 건축이 될 수 있다. 아이디어는 때로 형태로도 나타날 수 있는 과정의 일련에 존재한다. 모든 아이디어가 물리적으로 형상화 될 필요는 없다.^DSLW 아이디어 자체가 건축이다. 개념은 아이디어를 물질로 현실화하는 과정이다. 아이디어의 물성화는 다른 사람들이 그 아이디어에 접근할 수 있는 표현도구다. 그 표현도구는 연설, 글쓰기, 도면, 영화, 음악, 공연, 건축물 등 무엇이라도 될 수 있다.^SSS 모든 표현도구는 아이디어의 소통을 가능케 한다. 그러나 불행하게도 우리 건축은 아이디어 전달매체와 아이디어 자체를 혼동하고 있다. 드로잉도 건물도 그 자체로는 건축이 아니다.^DSSS

건축의 가장 순수한 정의는 건축의 근본에 대한 탐구일 것이다.^DJK 내가 건축이라고 말하는 모든 것은 건축이다, 내가 건축이라고 행하는 모든 행위는 건축이다.^DMLU 무엇이든 건축이 될 수 있다. 건축은 사물 간의 또는 공간 간의 관계가 아니라 관계들 간의 관계다.^DJK 당신이 건축이라고 믿고 있는 그 신념을 잊어라. 이제까지 당신이 해온 것들 중에서 좋았던 모든 것의 목록을 적어보라. 쇼핑 리스트를 만들 듯이 말이다. 당신의 삶, 이 세상 그리고 건축에서 좋았던 귀중한 경험들을 포함해서 말이다. 이 리스트를 가지고 목록의 모든 항목을 만족시키는 작업을 하라. 건축처럼 보일지 아닐지 신경 쓸 필요도 없다.DJK 모든 것이 건축이다.^HH
